Actresses Mckenna Grace and Kiernan Shipka have been cast to lead the survival thriller The Nowhere Game. The film, produced by Erik Feig’s production company Picturestart, will be directed by duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell with a script written by Alex Pototsky that was featured on the 2023 Black List. Charbonier and Powell have directed films such as 2020’s The Boy Behind the Door and 2021’s The Djinn, as well as having completed their third upcoming feature, Push.
The plot of the film is described as two young women, Carin (Grace) and Allie (Shipka), on a fun road trip that takes a dark turn when they are kidnapped by a ruthless killer as they are forced into a “brutal game of survival.” This game of survival has Carin and Allie being hunted in a forest with restricted supplies, all the while an online audience watches. The women have to rely on each other and themselves to make it out alive. When exploring the rough terrain, Carin and Allie find mysterious clues left behind by former “contestants,” making the women come to the realization about the odds of actual survival. As the killer draws closer, Carin and Allie need to put aside their fear in order to make the hunter into the hunted.
Grace was last seen on the big screen in 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and has an upcoming feature set to release this year in the form of Nobody 2. Shipka had a big year in 2024 with performances in Twisters, Longlegs, and the critically acclaimed drama The Last Showgirl. She also starred in Max’s Sweethearts, which was produced by Picturestart.
Picturestart is also coming off success when the body horror film Together, which stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie, sold to Neon for an estimated $17 million at Sundance, which is one of the biggest deals at this year’s festival.
