While Superman’s box office run begins to wind down, fans are turning their attention to what’s next for DC. One of these anticipated projects is the follow up to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, with the screenwriter even teasing it could be better than the first film.
In 2022, Reeves released The Batman to audiences, the latest in a long lineage of adaptations for the caped crusader. With Robert Pattinson playing Batman, viewers saw him learn how to work with his drive for vengeance while being a hero to the citizens of Gotham City, as the Riddler uncovers a political conspiracy that could tear the entire city apart.
The Batman became an instant hit upon release, especially among comic fans. Hailing it as one of the very best films Batman has seen, audiences have been looking forward to getting more of this version of Gotham City. Just last year, many got their fix with The Penguin, the HBO series that ran in tandem with the events of the film, but fans are clamoring for what The Batman: Part II specifically has in store.
Although the project has been delayed several times, production on the sequel has been steadily moving forward. Among these updates is one directly from screenwriter Mattson Tomlin in a response on X.
The only worthwhile reason to make a sequel to anything is because there’s a story burning to be told that you believe can top what came before.
Collider notes that the comment came from a user asking if there was any chance if the sequel could top the first film.
If what Tomlin said comes to pass, this could be yet another Batman sequel that not only rivals its predecessor in terms of quality, but also exceeds it. Specifically, Batman Returns, the follow up to Tim Burton’s Batman, is held by some to be better than Burton’s first foray into Gotham City, but the most noteworthy example comes with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. While Batman Begins is well regarded among fans and critics, its direct follow-up, The Dark Knight, is considered to be not only better than Begins, but is also hailed as one of the single greatest comic book movies of all time.
