Matt Reeves, director of Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Cloverfield, is now rumored to be the one to direct the upcoming Batman film. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. offered him the job, which comes as no surprise seeing as how he was approached weeks ago after Affleck’s wavering took a solid turn.
After what’s felt like years of Ben Affleck’s indecision regarding his level of involvement with DC’s upcoming Batman film, he’s finally announced his official decision. Affleck will still co-write and star in the film, while another collaborator will be brought on board as director. In his statement Affleck confesses that the level of focus required to direct and perform in his first solo Batman film would be too demanding. In order to deliver higher quality film he’s chosen to focus primarily on his performance. However, one has to wonder about the amount truth behind this statement seeing as Affleck has just come off Live by Night in which he acted as writer, director, and star. Does this mean he attributes the underwhelming response to this recent passion project as the result of him being overworked? Doubtful, considering the success of The Town and Argo, both of which he directed and starred in. Perhaps the idea of immediately undertaking the stress of another film that requires such a level of involvement just seemed too exhausting, or maybe he’s distancing himself from these DC films that seem to be consistently disappointing audiences.
Hopefully Reeves can assist in getting this new string of DC’s films back on track. Reeves has had immense success with helming blockbuster films like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the unique monster film Cloverfield. Reeves seems like both a safe and exciting choice for the studio, but only time will tell.
