In little over two weeks, one of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of the year will come out in theaters. The final trailer of Matrix Resurrections has just come out giving slightly more insight into the plot of the film and its characters.
The most evident changes from the original trilogy are all of the new faces in this fourth chapter of the Matrix franchise. A lot of the original cast has been replaced by younger actors, Yahya Abdul Mateen II has succeeded Laurence Fishburne as the enigmatic Morpheus and Jonathan Groff will take the place of Hugo Weaving as Neo’s nemesis Agent Smith.
But at the heart of the story will always be the irreplaceable duo, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss who are once again united and back in slow-motion action, twenty-two years after the first Matrix movie. At its core, the Matrix films have always been about their relationship and their mutual support to break free from virtual enslavement. In the original Matrix movie (1999) Trinity helped Mr. Anderson, who went under the hacker name Neo, awaken from virtual reality and open his eyes to the true world. In this new film, it seems that Neo will be returning the favor by helping Trinity escape from the computer-animated fiction world.
Director Lana Wachowski takes the french expression of “Deja Vu,” the feeling of experiencing something for the second time even though it is a first, on another level in Matrix Resurrections. As soon as the trailer starts Morpheus’ voice can be heard declaring, “We can’t see it, but we are all trapped in these strange repeating loops.” Each cut-scene will take Neo back to a flashback scene from the previous installments almost as if Neo has been living the same life over and over again in a loop. The hardcore fans of the franchise may remember the Oracle mentioning meeting previous incarnations of Neo in Matrix Reloaded (2003). Similar to previous installments Neo will have to save Trinity to save humanity from the machines, only this time something is different.
Overall the trailer does a fantastic job at giving the fans enough hints for them to get a feel of the movie but not enough to fully grasp what the full story will be about. On December 22nd just before Christmas Eve, viewers will have to follow the white rabbit to find out how to get out of the Matrix one last time.
