Another He-Man and the Masters of the Universe film might be on the move, with Sony considering its options since acquiring the rights from Warner Bros back in 2009. He-Man has long been a slow, dragging process that Sony has found difficult to get out of development. Despite the original Funimation cartoon’s success, this franchise has only had one live action adaptation: the critically panned Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren.
Meanwhile, while Sony’s Marvel properties like Far From Home easily broke the $1 billion mark, other franchises like the Men in Black soft reboot were underwhelming. Right now, Sony is still searching for its next blockbuster franchise and thinks it can get one from the He-Man Universe on March 2021.
Sony’s Motion Picture Group co-president Sanford Pinitch is currently overseeing the ongoing negotiations with Netflix, according to sources from THR. If Masters makes its way to Netflix, it will join familiar company under the streaming service with the well-received She-Ra and The Princesses of Power, a reboot of the originals series’ spin-off. Kevin Smith also has his hands on the revival of the 80’s cult classic, which will make its eventual debut sooner rather than later. Only time will tell for the franchise, with Sony looking for the best case scenario in hopes of resurrecting Masters of the Universe.
