A film that has gone through struggle to be acquired and released, Mary Magdalene, has finally found its window of release. Originally a property of the Weinstein Company, which collapsed following the allegations against founder Harvey Weinstein, the film was acquired by IFC films for distribution.
Directed by Garth Davis, who is known for his directing of the 2016 film Lion, Mary Magdalene tells the story from the bible of a woman who leaves her village to follow and be a disciple of Jesus Christ. It is a story that has been retold thousands of times over, but follows the events from the perspective of the woman, Mary, rather than from Jesus and his previous disciples. Starring as Mary Magdalene is Rooney Mara with Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus.
Alongside news of the new release date came a new trailer for the film. Mary Magdalene is set to open in US theaters on April 12th of this year. The newest trailer for the film can be checked out below.
