It’s been about 10 months since the pandemic started closing theaters, and even though a lot of films are slated to come out in 2021, it’s unclear if it will be safe enough to see them in a theater. For this reason, and so they don’t have to delay their films for any longer than they already have, Marvel Studios is game planning new talent deals in case some of their films end up having to release on Disney+ instead of in theaters.
According to TheWrap, the new deal gives key talent (actors, writers, producers and directors) adjusted compensation depending on if their films release in theaters or on Disney+. The key talent usually makes back end bonuses based on their film’s box office success, which is common occurrence for films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s unknown if this deal will affect films that have already wrapped, including Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, or The Eternals. The new deal would start with Marvel films entering production, beginning with Black Panther 2. It’s also unclear if this will affect any high-profile non-Marvel Disney projects like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King prequel or Tron: Ares, which are all expected to start production next year.
