Marvel’s new extended trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron offers fans a closer look at the superhero team’s latest formidable foe. If you haven’t kept up with the details so far, the film follows The Avengers as they must re-team to save the world after one of Tony Stark’s dormant peacekeeping programs – the creation of automated Iron Man suits – spawns the deadly Ultron, voiced by the creepy tones of James Spader (TV’s The Blacklist).
Compared to the film’s first trailer, this one opens with a new sequence, treating us to a longer version of Ultron’s eerie speech, in what looks to be his first attack on the team. In the monologue, Ultron claims “there’s only one path to peace – your extinction.” This idea, whether right or wrong, is enlightening when set up against the many internal squabbles within the Avengers. These conflicts are glimpsed in the previously leaked footage of the verbal sparring between Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), the teased fight between The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Iron Man in the trailer, as well as the new footage of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) laying hands to Stark’s throat at 1:57 in this trailer. Although Ultron physically manifests as the villain, his presence and reasons for attack forces The Avengers to face an unlikely antagonist – themselves. The serious implications this may bring to their roles as “heroes” makes for an enticing intellectual battle in the midst of saving the world.
How this ultimately plays out will have to wait, however, for the film’s release on May 1, 2015. In the meantime, view the extra behind-the-scenes footage and check back for continued coverage.
