Things are looking up for female superheroes, as Marvel has just hired Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauv to tag-team the script for The Avengers‘ first female protagonist, Captain Marvel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. This comes on the heels of the news that DC Comics’ Wonder Woman film has lost its director Michelle MacLaren to creative differences. Although DC originally beat out the MCU in the race for a stand-alone female superhero film, Captain Marvel is beginning to get a leg up for a 2018 release with a creative team already beginning to take form.
This will be Perlman and LeFauv’s first time working together, however, the two already have histories with Marvel and Disney respectively. Perlman co-wrote the script to last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy and LeFauv co-wrote the animated feature Inside Out, which Disney will release later this year.
The writing team will be dealing with the character of Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force Officer who develops super-human abilities after an encounter with the Kree alien race, allowing her to absorb energy, blast fire from her hands, as well as fight with super-strength. In addition to her own MCU film, Captain Marvel will eventually be incorporated into The Avengers films and possibly even the Guardians of the Galaxy, which would make Perlman’s involvement all the more valuable.
Captain Marvel is still in early development and has yet to lock in either a director or lead actress. It would likely be a smart choice for Marvel to fill these roles with similarly fresh female faces, since this is a fairly unknown character to non-comic book reading fans and therefore has a lot of potential creative freedom behind it, in addition to being a great launching pad for new female talent.
