While many people have been pushing for a queer super hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, anyone who saw Avengers: Endgame will have seen the debut of their first canonically queer character. The scene, which featured co-director Joe Russo, confirms his sexuality when he mentions that after the film’s villain, Thanos, snaps some of the world’s population into oblivion, his partner was included in the snap. The Russo brothers talked about the importance of representation in an interview, but the choice was met with backlash from the LGBT community for the minuscule part its character had in the film, branding the choice ineffective.
Recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, gave his perspective on the backlash to IndieWire, saying that the character represented a “matter of life” and wasn’t meant to be as much of a big deal as audiences took it. The intention was never to focus all attention on the fact that it was the first mention of the LGBT community in a Marvel film, but to just be a moment that reflects real life.
Feige also mentioned that he liked how Captain America didn’t react as if the mention of sexuality was surprising to him. Feige finished by confirming that people shouldn’t give up hope on a future LGBT hero.
