Get a First Look at Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women,’ Out this December

The first on-set pictures of director Greta Gerwig’s second feature film, Little Women, have just debuted on Vanity Fair. The film stars Meryl Streep as Aunt March, Saoirse Ronan as Jo March, Timothée Chalamet as Theodore “Laurie” Lawrence, Emma Watson as Meg March, and Florence Pugh as Amy March. Laura Dern will also join the cast as Marmee March. The film will follow Jo March as she and her sisters leave their family home and explore 1860s Massachusetts. Chalamet will take on the role of the March family’s neighbor who becomes close with Jo as she challenges traditional feminine stereotypes of the time period.

Little Women is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel of the same name. This film is significant in its release because it marks Gerwig’s second solo directing job after her critically acclaimed 2017 film, Lady Bird, which also stars Ronan and Chalamet. Filming began October 5, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts and ended months later on December 15.

This will be the eighth film adaptation of Little Women, the most famous previous adaptations being the 1933 film starring Katharine Hepburn and the 1994 remake starring Winona Ryder. The film is set to be released in the United States by Colombia Pictures on December 25, 2019.
