Martin Scorsese is set to receive a special honor at the Berlin Film Festival. The award is the lifetime achievement Golden Bear honor.
“For anyone who considers cinema as the art of shaping a story in such a way that is both completely personal and universal, Martin Scorsese is an unmatched role model,” Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, co-directors of the festival, had to say about Scorsese. “His films have accompanied our history as spectators and human beings, his characters have lived and grown within us, his view of history and mankind has helped us to understand and question who we are and where we come from.”
Scorsese’s most recent picture, Killers Of The Flower Moon, opened to great critical reception and is currently all over the awards circuit. One of his most recent works, 2019’s The Irishman, made its own splash when awards season rolled around, even being nominated for Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards.
As Hollywood Reporter points out as well, this isn’t the first time Scorsese has been in Berlin on film business. Three of his past films, Raging Bull, Gangs Of New York, and Shutter Island ran out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as his 1992 feature Cape Fear screening competitively at the fest.
Scorsese is set to receive the Golden Bear honor on February 20th, 2024.
