Snow White, Disney’s latest live action reimagining of one of their most iconic films, is set to debut next week. However, one of the leading actors on the project, Martin Klebba, shared his own viewpoint on the film, specifically the controversy surrounding it.
Directed by Marc Webb, Snow White fell under fire during the lead up to its premiere for two big reasons. One issue that stirred up controversy was comments made by Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White herself, specifically regarding the original animated film. She has been very open about her distaste for it, and how it handled the main character.
On the other hand, the film also ran headlong into controversy after revealing how they chose to bring the seven dwarfs to life. Rather than use little people to play them, they utilized motion capture and CGI, leaving Klebba, a little person himself, the only one to have a hand in playing one.
Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Klebba commented on both of those issues and how they affect the film. Reportedly, he suggested that the problems surrounding Zegler caused the Red Carpet premiere to be changed heavily. While usually in attendance for any Red Carpet, Snow White’s will not include journalists to any capacity. However, Hollywood Reporter made it clear that Klebba mentioned he was given no concrete information as to why the Red Carpet underwent these changes, and it was never explicitly stated to be a result of Zegler.
He also addressed the issue with the seven dwarfs, defending the choices made by the filmmakers. He explained that he felt their place in the world wouldn’t be diminished by the movie not using their talents. “So I didn’t get the whole stuff about not doing the dwarfs. The story’s been around forever, and it’s a classic,” he said. He went on to state he finds it would be difficult to cast seven little people to pull off each of the group, while CGI and motion capture still employ a level of creativity when bringing the story to life.
Snow White hits theaters this Friday.
