Tons of information has been swirling the live-action remake of Mulan, with the recent announcement of Donnie Yen joining the cast of the film as of two days ago. Now, we have gained even more information about two popular and strong actors that have joined the cast. Martial artist Jet Li and famed actress Gong Li are set to join the cast of Mulan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Their roles in the film somewhat change the story of the original animated film.
Mulan will still feature the young woman who disguises herself as a man to join the army in her father’s place, but the difference is the antagonist. Instead of the Hun leader Shan Yu attacking the Chinese emperor, the film instead features a powerful witch with no name who has plans to control the country. The film will also feature a new character in the form of Mulan’s sister.
Liu Yifei is set to play the titular character, with the other actors and actresses playing important roles, including Gong Li as the witch, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jet Li as the emperor, and Xana Tang as Mulan’s sister. The film is being directed by Niki Caro, and is set to release sometime in 2020.
