Mark Ruffalo Discusses ‘Avengers 4’ Filming Process and How It Will End

It’s a running gag in Marvel film circles that Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo can’t help but dish out spoilers during press junkets, so anytime these two give interviews they receive extra attention from hawkeyed spoiler junkies. Recently Mark Ruffalo spoke to The Marvelists podcast, focusing on the Avengers 4 filming process and how on-the-fly decisions can impact the end of an era for this phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ruffalo talked about the planned reshoots in late September for Avengers 4, elaborating that they are doing more than simply touching up certain scenes. “We’re not just doing reshoots,” he said. “We’re going to finish the movie, which we really didn’t get to finish totally when we left it last year.” He went on to discuss more about Joe and Anthony Russo‘s strategy for cobbling together the highly anticipated film. “It’s a very living organism,” said Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner (and his alter ego the Hulk) in the MCU. “Even as we approach it being a locked picture, we’re still working on it.”

As with many films, it appears that the filming process for Avengers 4 is often improvised rather than hard-scripted. “Some [plot decision-making] is happening while we’re there,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing. And we’ll shoot some stuff and a few days later come back and reshoot it cause we wanna take it in another direction.”

When asked about how it ends for the Hulk following the fourth Avengers film, Ruffalo pleads ignorance, probably hoping to avoid massive spoilers months before the film’s release. “Yeah, I don’t know,” he claimed. “I have no idea.”

Well, it looks like Ruffalo managed to escape from this interview relatively unscathed. We’ll keep an eye out for new Spider-Man interviews to see if Mr. Holland offers up juicier nuggets of information before Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
