With James Gunn’s reboot of the DC Universe, the journey for several previous DC actors, including Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Henry Cavill’s Superman, has come to an end. However, there was still some hope for Margot Robbie’s character, Harley Quinn.
Robbie entered the DC Extended Universe, or the DCEU, playing Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, alongside an ensemble cast such as Will Smith, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne and Viola Davis. From there, she portrayed Harley again in Birds of Prey and completed a trilogy of appearances in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Since John Cena’s character, Peacemaker, survived the DC reboot, there is still hope for Robbie and Harley Quinn as well. However, Robbie has shared that she is also still unsure of the character’s future. In an interview with Variety, Robbie was asked if she had been asked to reprise her role. She responded, “I’ve heard nothing. You can’t get sick of Harley. I love her so deeply. I always had high hopes for her, like Batman… a character that lives on long after I’ve had a go at it. I feel like I need to share Harley.”
Her response about possibly handing over Harley gets confusing when you take into account that Gunn recently made comments possibly teasing Robbie could return as Ms. Quinn. When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn simply said, “That will be revealed down the line,” in response to a question about the franchise’s future.
So, it’s still possible Robbie could portray Harley at some point in the future, as it seems Gunn has not ruled her out yet. But as of right now, just like us fans, Robbie is unsure of the future for the character.
