Margot Robbie Reportedly Involved in Producing New ‘Tank Girl’ Film

In an era where comic book movies are the most popular films right now, it seems like every relatively well-known comic character is getting the silver screen treatment. Outside of the regular superheroes from Marvel and DC comics, there are a plethora of other popular characters supposedly awaiting a movie adaptation. One in particular is the cult favorite character Tank Girl, created by Martin and Jamie Hewlett. In fact, it was stated by Martin Hewlett that Tank Girl is getting another film adaptation, with Margot Robbie involved in production.

The original Tank Girl comic was created in 1988 and gained a cult following due to it’s creative art style and feminist themes, then-uncommon for comic books at the time. The character did receive a film adaptation back in 1995 starring Lori Petty, but the film was a commercial and critical flop even at the time of release. Some may say that, with comic book films gaining a better reputation now, Tank Girl would definitely be a more viable property to reboot.

Alan Martin stated in a recent Twitter post (see above) that Margot Robbie’s company, Lucky Chap Entertainment, is developing a new Tank Girl film after buying the rights from MGM. Martin also stated that he and Jamie Hewlett are unsure if they will have any involvement with the upcoming film due to not being contacted by anyone involved with the project.

Many are predicting that Robbie will be cast as the titular heroine due to her popularity as Harley Quinn, which both characters have a ton of similarities. However, no true confirmation has been stated in regards to her involvement. It is also very likely that Robbie will be simply producing the project, since she has gained some recognition as a producer for I, Tonya and DC’s upcoming film, Birds of Prey. 

Regardless of her role, Robbie being involved in a new Tank Girl feature would be very fitting as Lucky Chap tends to focus a lot on films with very strong feminist themes. A character like Tank Girl would be prime match for Robbie and, with more and more outlandish comic book characters getting film adaptations like Deadpool, a Tank Girl movie would definitely make sense for this new age of comic book movies.
