Mandy Pantinkin (Homeland) has joined the cast of Wonder, which already has on board Julia Roberts (Money Monster), Jacob Tremblay (Room), Noah Jupe (AMC’s The Night Manager), Owen Wilson (Zoolander 2), and Broadway’s Daveed Diggs in his first post-Hamilton feature film role. The news was first reported by Deadline.
Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) is directing from a screenplay adapted by Jack Thorne and Steve Conrad. Based on R.J. Palacio’s best-selling YA novel, the story centers on Auggie Pullman (Tremblay), a 5th grade boy born with significant facial deformities who now is entering mainstream classes at school for the first time. He faces the challenge of convincing his classmates that he is just an ordinary kid despite his different appearance. Roberts and Wilson play the boy’s parents, Jupe is Auggie’s best friend, and Diggs is in the role of a teacher at Auggie’s school.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing under their Mandeville Films banner.
Patinkin famously played the persistent revenge-seeking character of Inigo Montoya in 1987’s cult hit The Princess Bride. He was a voice actor in the English version of the animated Japanese feature The Wind Rises and will be voicing Papa Smurf in Sony’s upcoming animated feature Smurfs: The Lost Village.
Wonder has just gone into production with Participant Media and Walden Media joining Lionsgate and TIK Films to co-finance and executive produce. As with Patinkin’s Smurfs, Wonder is scheduled to bow in U.S. theaters on April 7, 2017
