Maggie Gyllenhaal Shows Off New Look At Upcoming Film ‘The Bride’

The monster is alive and on the loose once again. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal has given a first look at a brand new interpretation of the iconic Frankenstein’s monster by way of her film The Bride.

Frankenstein, originally written by Mary Shelley, has been a staple of literature since its publication in 1818. Since then, it’s been the subject of a multitude of reimaginings over the years, staying no stranger to movie adaptations.

Frankenstein’s monster, most notably played by Boris Karloff, is being played by Christian Bale in the upcoming film The Bride. Gyllenhaal’s new film follows Frankenstein’s creation, lonely and seeking companionship, working with a doctor to reanimate a recently deceased woman into his bride.

As Hollywood Reporter notes, the appearance of Bale’s monster, posted by Gyllenhaal to her Instagram, evokes classic imagery of the monster, with a new spin on it. The scars and scratches are present, while also sporting a tattoo on his chest.

Bale recently lent his voice to the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron, the recipient of the 2024 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Alongside Bale, Jessie Buckley will portray the bride of the monster. Buckley played a role in an Oscar-winning film, 2022’s Women Talking. She had a role, as well, in Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters, working with Olivia Colman, as well as playing Marya in the 2016 BBC mini-series War and Peace.
