There are nearly limitless descriptors for the pop icon Madonna. For a while, the media thought she was too “inappropriate,” with her music being labeled as “seductive.” With her career entangled with adoring fans as well as numerous controversies, it seems only right for her to finally tell her story. To do that, Madonna has collaborated with Netflix to develop a limited series based on her life and career.
It should be noted that this series is not connected to the Madonna biopic film that was in development with Universal, which was later tossed aside in 2023 as the pop star wanted to prioritize her world tour. The music icon is set to executive produce this limited series alongside Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy. Madonna has made it clear that she wants to be the one to tell her story. When the feature was first announced in 2020, Madonna commented, “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being trying to make her way in this world.” Then in 2022, Madonna spoke on her reason to take the driver’s seat with the now-scrapped film, telling Variety, “I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, ‘No one’s going to tell my story but me’.”
Julia Garner was the choice to portray the Queen of Pop in the feature and has remained vocal about her interest in the project, going as far as to make an appearance on stage with the singer during Madonna’s Celebration tour. It feels right to infer that the three-time Emmy winner will stay on the project unless scheduling conflicts get in the way.
There is not a lot known about the series itself, even where Madonna will begin her story, as it is in the earliest days of development. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later that we receive more news about this project.
