During an interview with The Wrap, Madame Web star Dakota Johnson revealed that the original screenplay had undergone numerous rewrites. While she couldn’t go into deep detail regarding these changes, it’s clear that whatever the final product was might not have been intended at all.
While the original story is currently unknown, Johnson remembers that the first draft she read differed from what she had signed on for. “There were drastic changes,” she noted with a small laugh. “And I can’t even tell you what they were.”
Johnson also mentioned how she still had trouble with the shooting regarding action sequences and continuity. Since the film grappled with future vision, they had to shoot certain scenes multiple times with “so many different camera set-ups, like triple the amount of work.” She admitted it was hard to keep up with the little changes made between shots, and she applauded director SJ Clarkson for tracking everything going on.
Even so, Johnson was not used to shooting action sequences, especially those with visual effects. In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson joked that she struggled with scenes where she was ”on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion.” She cheekily called it “psychotic” and admitted to worrying that she thought, “’I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!’”
Despite these issues, Johnson showed faith in Clarkson’s direction. “She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started,” Johnson claimed. Even if the film did not turn out perfectly, Dakota Johnson had a passion for the film, which has shined through her much-praised performance as the titular Madame Web.
