With the release of Madame Web, many critics and news outlets flooded social media with their first reactions. Unfortunately, most of these reactions range from disappointment to disgust.

Madame Web is the fourth feature of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) after Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. The story follows the titular character (Dakota Johnson) as she struggles to save three women with developing powers from a villain who seeks to destroy them before they can reach their true potential.

So far, the SSU has suffered from both box office and critical drop-offs. Unfortunately, Madame Web has continued this trend.

Most critics on Twitter have complained about the movie’s lackluster writing, characters, and action sequences. According to user @BB18180, “a few good moments” were still difficult to endure. Cris Parker was less kind to the feature, calling Madame Web “probably the worst comic book movie [he has] ever seen.” “I sat there baffled scene by scene someone approved this (sic). The memes will redeem it,“ he joked. Matt Ramos glibly remarked, “Morbius was better.”

Even so, some people gave somewhat positive reviews. They have either been neutral or praised it for its cast and tone. for instance, James Preston Poole called the film “just kinda there.” He appreciated the leads’ performances and the “slasher/FINAL DESTINATION meets superheroes vibes,” but he still dismisses it as a film that only takes up space.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kevin Fenix has praised the cast’s work “with what they had” and the costume design. Even though he feels the final product “couldve (sic) been tidied up a bit more,” he believed that the film “exceeds expectations.”

Even Cris Parker praised some of the film’s aspects, most noticeably Dakota Johnson and Adam Scott. He also applauded the film’s early 2000s aesthetic, noting a stand-out scene where the lead characters “sing/dance to Britney Spears (sic) ‘Toxic’ & it slayed.”According to Parker, people should see the movie for themselves and “form [their] own opinion” since “some of the good may outweigh the bad” for them.
