Director M. Night Shyamalan is back with a No.1 box office release after giving his loyal fans the final episode of the Glass trilogy only two years ago. Old follows this unique director’s line of movies with refreshing originality, something that is much needed in an era of sequels and remakes. Old is looking to make $15mil in the box office on its opening weekend and thus taking the lead over Snake Eyes with only $12.5mil.
Even though Henry Golding was a fantastic choice to cast for the lead of Snake Eyes it seems like it just isn’t enough to get audiences back in the movie theaters to watch a good, old action-packed origin story. G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra, starring Channing Tatum, was first released in 2009. Back then it grossed over $302.5million worldwide, not bad for an adaptation of an action figure series from the 80s. Some fans might just have lost interest in this superhero series over time, as Paramount Studios spread the release of four films over the course of eleven years.
Old should rather be called New as it brings new ideas to the table and with it a wildly unpredictable plot. Sadly, the same cannot be said about Snake Eyes. It might sound a bit simplistic to say that this weekend’s B.O. results are solely based on these two films’ originality or lack thereof. But it is rather refreshing to see how a lower-budget film, with an intriguing plot beats an action movie with amazing choreography and special effects at the box office, even if it’s just for one weekend.
