Famous action star Lucy Liu has been cast as the titular character Cheng Shih in an immersive VR experience titled The Pirate Queen. A teaser trailer has just been released and unveils the gameplay for the upcoming release at the Tribeca Festival.
Overseen by Eloise Singer from Singer Studios, The Pirate Queen is set to be the start of a multimedia franchise consisting of other graphic novels, podcasts, and TV series alongside China’s Seesaw Films. Singer has expressed her excitement in helping to bring Cheng Shih’s story to life, applauding Liu’s ability to add “layers of complexity to Cheng Shih’s personality, making the Pirate Queen a truly compelling and memorable character.”
Even Liu, who is also set to executive produce, has shared her excitement during an interview, where she expresses her awe at Shih’s story and how she became a formidable pirate leader centuries ago. The project is also Liu’s first time portraying a character in a VR experience, and she proclaims her eagerness to use this opportunity “to share this historical narrative with a potentially new and expanded audience.”
The Pirate King will be released for the Tribeca Festival exclusively on June 7-18 and will follow the player as Cheng Shih solves puzzles to gain power in 19th-century China.
