Luca Guadagnino shared more about his upcoming American Psycho remake during a Lionsgate video segment at CinemaCon on Tuesday. The Call Me by Your Name director is currently adapting the Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, American Psycho, and not the 2000 Mary Harron film of the same name.
Though the cast remains unknown, Guadagnino confirmed that Scott Z. Burns (The Report, Contagion) is penning the script. “He’s doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely,” said the Challengers director.
Excitement around the lead has been developing for months. Despite differentiating itself from the 2000 Lionsgate film, the star will be following in the footsteps of Christian Bale. The role of iconic serial killer, Patrick Bateman, was significant for The Dark Knight actor as it “propelled him into a new level of super-stardom.”
An October 2024 Variety article, “Who Should Play Patrick Bateman in the New ‘American Psycho’ From Luca Guadagnino?”, named prospects like Charles Melton, Dev Patel, and Aubrey Plaza. Though the stars have yet to be cast, he is in “conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads.” Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi are the likeliest candidates.
Guadagnino expressed, “We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much.”
Sam Pressman, whose father produced the 2000 movie, is executive producing the new version.
