Love Hurts’ reviews are in, and it seems that critics and audiences alike are not loving this film. From the producers of 2021’s Nobody and 2022’s Violent Night, this action-comedy, directed by Jonathan Eusebio, has Ke Huy Quan in the leading role of a previous hitman now reformed into a realtor who finds himself stuck back into his old profession without his consent. Along with the subpar reception, this film is also estimated to take a downward hit at the domestic box office.
Love Hurts’ received a CinemaScore of C+ from the opening day audiences. While action films are known to not do well critically on audience-polling platforms, Love Hurts has fallen behind the two films previously mentioned. With Ilya Naishuller’s Nobody earning an A- CinemaScore, this film stars Bob Odenkirk as a family man who gets pulled back into his former profession as an assassin, and Tommy Wirkola’s Violent Night, starring David Harbour as a homicidal Santa Claus, received a B+ from CinemaScore.
The film has a critical score of 19% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer but has a hopeful 68% for the audience score. That can be looked at in an optimistic light, but this film that was reportedly produced on an $18 million budget is only estimated to bring home a debut weekend haul in the single digits.
All this to say, Love Hurts’ debut is doing poorly for a movie that has two Oscar winners in its leading cast in Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose. Those are not the only recognizable actors that make up this ensemble, with this film having performances from Sean Astin, Rhys Darby, Lio Tipton, and Daniel Wu.
