After throwing some Justice League cameos into The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will now get a chance at a full superhero film. Warner Bros wants the writing duo to provide the story for The Flash and possibly direct. The decision should please critics of the Snyder/Nolan/Goyer approach since Lord and Miller are best known for comedies like The Lego Movie and 21/22 Jump Street.
Warner currently has a Flash TV series airing on the CW starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen. The show, should it continue, will be on its fourth season when The Flash releases in theaters in 2018. The film will star Ezra Miller in the title role though Warner has not announced if he will play Barry Allen or Wally West. Since the show will not take place within the timeline of the films, the smart money is probably on West.
While Marvel and Disney have turned their superhero films into the most popular film franchise of the moment with the highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron releasing next month, Warner and DC have struggled to generate that same level of anticipation among audiences. Marvel’s films have maintained a consistently lighter, more comedic tone than Man of Steel and its spiritual predecessor, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. Lord and Miller were widely praised for The Lego Movie and their characterization of Batman. Their unique approach to writing DC Universe superheroes could be the shot in the arm that Warner Bros needs.
