After days of teasing from James Gunn, the teaser trailer for Supergirl is here.
The trailer stars House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, and the cousin of Superman. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. The film is being adapted from material in Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series, which ran from 2021-2022 across 8 issues.
The trailer gives a look at Kara, her powers, and how she spends her free time. There is also a quick glimpse at Jason Momoa’s new DC character, the bounty hunter Lobo. Also in the trailer, Kara encounters a little girl, and it appears she takes her under her wing and looks out for her. The girl asks her about Krypton, her (and Superman’s) home planet, and she replies with “Krypton didn’t die in a day. The Gods are not that kind.”
Gillespie shared with Collider that this film will be vastly different from Superman in its tone. He said in a conversation with Gunn, “When we came in, and James was in the middle of shooting Superman when I met on this, I said, ‘How much do you want us to tie in to what you’re doing?’ And he said, ‘I want to treat this like the comic book world, where each one is its own graphic novel, with its own artists and its own story writers. And this is your vision of it. Take that and do what you want with it.”
On December 7, at the Artspace at Public Hotel in New York City, the trailer was shown to the crowd, with Gillespie, Gunn and Alock sharing their thoughts on the film. Gillespie told the crowd, “This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different [from] where Superman is in his life.” “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all. Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while,” added Gunn.
Alcock said, “It’s really surreal seeing everyone’s work come together. I feel like I’m really excited for everybody to see all of our crew’s hard work, and curating the worlds, physically, all the aliens, all the VFX, literally thousands of people who made this project come to life. So I’m really excited for their work to be reflected.”
Look out for Supergirl to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026. Check out the teaser trailer below.
