In a February 25th interview with Business Insider, Lizzy Caplan addressed the scrapped Gambit movie she was to co-star in with Channing Tatum. The 20th Century Fox film was initially reported on by Deadline in 2017. Though the film planned to start shooting, it was axed following the 2019 Fox-Disney merger.
Caplan described the unique concept as a “’30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world.” The character of Gambit was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990 in association with X-Men. The character charges matter with volatile kinetic energy that causes the object to explosively release on impact.
Despite Caplan’s film never having been made, Tatum was recently able to play Gambit in Ryan Reynolds and Huge Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The 21 Jump Street actor’s connection to the role was made evident in a 2024 X post where he praised Ryan Reynolds for putting him in the movie. Further, in a 2022 interview with Variety, Tatum commented: “Once ‘Gambit’ went away, I was so traumatized… I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”
Caplan finds the scrapping “kind of odd”, but she doesn’t seem too worried. The Mean Girls actress commented that she’s okay with not having starred in the superhero movie.
