Lizzy Caplan will take the female lead opposite Channing Tatum in Fox’s superhero film Gambit, according to Variety.
The film is finally finding its legs after losing directors multiple times – both Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt joined and exited the project in the past year. With the star Tatum on board, as well as new director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) and now Caplan, there seems to be an end in sight on production. Fox currently projects the release date for February 14, 2019.
The plot of the film has been kept mostly under wraps thus far, but we do know that it will be an X-Men spinoff following the mutant Gambit, whose ability to manipulate kinetic energy sees him wielding playing cards and other projectiles. Caplan’s character has not yet been revealed.
Tatum is producing the movie, which is being filmed from a script by Reid Carolin.
Caplan, first known for her breakout role in Mean Girls, has since enjoyed a healthy slew of roles, including on the series Masters of Sex, which garnered her an Emmy nomination. She has most recently been seen in Now You See Me 2 and will next be seen in the sci-fi thriller Extinction with Michael Peña.
