As the pandemic continues to go on, let’s take a moment and appreciate an odd, but solid year of films. The 78th annual Golden Globes are live now. We will be giving live updates throughout the night. Hosting this years Golden Globes are the popular SNL duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Only this time they will be hosting the show bi-costal for the first semi-virtual Golden Globes.
Fey and Poehler have a lot on their plate this evening, and are over 3,000 miles apart, but they seem to be getting along just fine opening up the show.
The night will be filled with awards, jokes, and a ton of stars zooming in from their respective homes.
5:40 p.m . : After some technical difficulties, here we are updating. Aaron Sorkin has won Best Screenplay for The Trial of the Chicago 7. In his acceptance speech, he discussed the importance of the film for that time, years after, and even the present events that took place earlier this year at the Capitol in 2021. This is Sorkin’s third Golden Globe, previously winning for The Social Network and Steve Jobs. Sorkin was up against stiff competition including Emerald Fennell(Promising Young Woman) and Chloe Zhao(Nomadland).
5:45 p.m: Catching up on the first half-hour of the show, Soul won Best Animated Feature. Soul is also unique as co-writer and co-director Kemp Powers is the first black director to helm Pixar film. The writer also adapted his play One Night At Miami for the screen, which also garnered its own slew of nominations tonight. In addition to Soul, British actor Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Civil Rights Activist Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, this is Kaluuya’s second nomination and first win. He was initially nominated for his starring role in Jordan Peele’s 2017 masterpiece Get Out. Here is the actor’s acceptance speech.
6:10 p.m: Tracey Morgan gave a hilarious introduction to the Best Original Song and Score Categories. “Io Sì”(‘Seen’), music by Diane Warren, lyrics by Diane Warren, Laura Pausini, and Niccolò Agliardi has won Best Original Song from The Life Ahead, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste, have won Best Score for their work on the Pixar film Soul. As for EGOTs, Tracey Morgan is still four awards away from being in that prestigious club.
6:25 p.m: The transitions into commercial breaks have been a lot of fun to watch this year. Typically the nominees can look to the stage, but this year the nominees all are awkwardly waiting in their respective homes and deciding if they should talk or just smile for their cameras. It reminds us of the horribly awkward moments that we’ve all experienced in this past year on Zoom.
6:33 p.m: Silver fox Ben Stiller is looking classy as ever, and now understands cryptocurrency. Rosamund Pike has won Best Actress in Comedy or Musical for her role in I Care A Lot. Maria Bakalova(Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma) were break-out stars in the last year, and were seemingly heavy favorites to win Best Actress for Comedy or Musical. However, Pike takes home her first Golden Globe, after being nominated two times previously. I Care A Lot is currently streaming on Netflix.
6:43 p.m: A live meme count was had. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler said that these three things are meme worthy. Don Cheadle telling Jason Sudeikis to wrap it up, Tracey Morgan in general, and Jason Sudeikis’ casual awards attire. So it mainly seems that people with ties to NBC and SNL are really getting the big meme-worthy moments, but fingers crossed there is an actual Sudeikis hoodie on NBC.com one of these days.
6:50 p.m: Best Foreign Language film goes to Minari, though everyone in the creative team from director Lee Isaac Chung to actor Steven Yuen and the production company A24, is largely American, and the story itself is about a family in Arkansas. There has been a ton of backlash surrounding the nomination in the category of foreign language film. However, as Chung said in his acceptance speech, the film is not English or Foreign language, but a language of love that he and all of us are still trying to figure out. His daughter seems to know it though as she screamed “I prayed! I prayed!” as soon as Minari won.
7:00 p.m: Jane Fonda has won the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The 83 year-old actor has been a main stay since her first roles in the 1960’s. More than simply a performer, Fonda is an activist, leader, and was actually married to Tom Hayden, who was portrayed by Eddie Redmayne in last year’s The Trial of the Chicago 7. The Cecil B. DeMille Award is named after the famous director and producer, and is for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Fonda has surely given outstanding contributions to more than just the entertainment world. And she’s still trying. She said in her speech that she wants to expand Hollywood and allow so many other stories to be told. Stories about every type of person.
7:15 p.m: Jamie Lee Curtis got the opportunity to announce that “her bestie” Jodie Foster won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Mauritanian. Foster was surprised, as the actor most famous for her role in Silence of the Lambs, has largely taken step back from performing. This is her first role in three years, and she was pleasantly surprised by this win. Her speech was genuine and also had the help of having a cute dog on her lap. Foster was up against huge competition in the category including Amanda Seyfried(Mank) and Glenn Close(Hillbilly Elegy).
7:35 p.m: Chadwick Boseman has won Best Actor in Drama for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom posthumously. The actor passed away in late August of 2020. But his spirit and his wonderful performances will live on. As Levee in the August Wilson adaptation, Boseman gives a beautiful final live action performance. It is a heartbreaking and true performance. Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, gave a heart-wrenching acceptance speech. She told of all the people he would thank, and the inspirational words that he would have given the world if he were around today. The actor may not be around, but his legacy will always be remembered.
7:38 p.m: Chloé Zhao has won Best Director for Nomadland. The director is the first woman of color to win in this category. Barbra Streisand was previously the only woman to have won the Golden Globe for Best Director all the way back in 1983 for Yentl. This has been a huge year for women directors as for the first time three women made up the majority of the nominees. Regina King and Emerald Fennell were nominated for One Night in Miami and Promising Young Woman, respectively. In her acceptance speech, Zhao tells of compassion that the nomads showed her. Nomadland is a wonderfully sweet slice of life film and is currently streaming on Hulu.
7:46 p.m: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has won Best Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. Sacha Baron Cohen gave a speech where he jabbed at his co-star Rudy Giuliani and the “all-white” Hollywood Foreign Press. Baron Cohen’s Borat has garnered a lot of success in the mainstream, even winning him Best Actor in a Comedy for his first film. The next category could see him winning his second for the character, which is largely rare. Baron Cohen also thanked his wife, Isla Fisher, as well as the hard working crew that worked during the pandemic.
7:52 p.m: Update: Sacha Baron Cohen has won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. Predicted by mxdwn movies little less than five minutes ago, Baron Cohen has won his second Golden Globe for his role as the foreign journalist Borat. In his acceptance speech, Baron Cohen saved one last zinger at the former president. All things aside, Baron Cohen’s performance is incredible and is certainly one of the best comedic characters of the 21st century. Let’s just hope Borat impressions stay on the decline…
Not!
8:00 p.m: As we enter the third hour of this blog the Joker himself, Joaquin Phoenix, appears in a nice jacket to announce Best Actress in a Drama and to let all of us bloggers know that this is almost over. Andra Day has won Best Actress for The United States vs. Billie Holiday for her role as the titled singer. Day gave sweet acceptance speech, and thanked the other performers in the category, including heavy hitters such as Viola Davis and Carey Mulligan. This is Day’s first Actress nomination and win.
8:02 p.m: Just two minutes over time, the 2021 semi-virtual Golden Globes have been wrapped up with Nomadland taking home Best Picture. This is Nomadland’s second big award of the night, after director Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win Best Director. As the award show wrapped up Zhao put it perfectly, it’s not a goodbye but a “see you down the road.”
Final Update 8:10 p.m: There were laughs, cries, and technical errors at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards. It was exciting to see young up and coming actors win huge awards as well as history being made with a few of the wins. Here’s to hoping next year’s awards season will be a little more normal(physically and in person), but without the walls that held Hollywood and previous awards ceremonies back. Here’s to more Chloé Zhaos, Anya Taylor-Joys, and Chadwick Bosemans that have yet to be discovered yet.
Cheers.
