Disney may have another tidal wave of a hit on their hands. A new trailer has just debuted for the upcoming live action reimagining of Moana.
When her oceanside village is put in danger, the young Moana has to set out on a quest across the sea to save her people. As she encounters demigods and larger than life creatures, Moana is pushed to do whatever she can to save her village and her people.
The young Catherine Laga’aia is stepping in to play the role of Moana, securing her first leading role at just 19 years old. Rena Owen, John Tui, and Frankie Adams join the supporting cast, alongside Dwayne Johnson coming back to the role of Maui, jumping from voicing the character in animation to playing him in live action.
Thomas Kail, bringing his musical experience to the table, will be directing the film. He also directed the film version of the Broadway hit Hamilton, as well as the movie turned stage play turned TV special Grease Live. Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller will be writing the screenplay, after working together on 2024’s Moana 2.
In their coverage of the trailer, The Wrap noted that Moana is something of a box office sensation. The first film, back in 2016, made a huge splash when it came to gross, making just shy of $700 million. When Moana 2 came around, the box office was absolutely dominated by it, making well over a billion dollars following a historic Thanksgiving weekend debut.
Moana hits theaters July 10th. Check out the trailer below.
