The 1940 animated Disney film Pinocchio is next in line to receive a live-action adaptation, much like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Mulan, and more.
The movie will star Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the lonely wood worker who eventually becomes Pinocchio’s father. Hanks looks very in character in Gepetto’s iconic mustache. Also featured in the trailer is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, who can be seen in multiple different action shots escaping trouble.
Pinocchio of course cannot be totally live action, not with the amount of walking-talking animal characters so vital to the story, but the trailer rightfully displays that the integration between real actors and animation is well done.
Though scarcely featured in the teaser, the main role of Pinocchio will be played by British actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. At only 13, Ainsworth has already worked on notable projects such as Disney’s Flora & Ulysses and Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.
Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, Lorraine Bracco, and Keegan-Michael Key also star in the fantasy film alongside Hanks, Gordon-Levitt, and Ainsworth.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Pinocchio will premiere on Disney+ for Disney Plus Day, September 8.
