In an announcement furthering Disney’s trend of adapting its animated classics into live-action franchises, the House of Mouse has announced that they will make a live-action prequel to Aladdin, its 1992 Oscar-winning animated classic. The film will be titled Genies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie will be set in the home realm of the genies, including the one popularized by the late Robin Williams (Boulevard) that would help street urchin Aladdin in 1992 original. The film will reveal how Genie ended up in the fateful lamp as well as inside the Cave of Wonders. Partners Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (2009’s Friday the 13th) will pen the script and Tripp Vinson (San Andreas) will produce. Disney also revealed that Genies may lead to a live-action Aladdin film in the future.
Since the financial and critical success of last year’s Cinderella, Disney has announced plans for live-action versions of Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, and a sequel to Maleficent. The company is also working on live-action adaptations of Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan.
Disney’s next live-action adaptation will be the sequel to the one that started the company’s live-action renaissance with Alice Through the Looking Glass.
