‘Little Women’ to be Remade by Sony, Amy Pascal

The beloved book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is now set for another adaptation, this time through Sony, with Amy Pascal taking the reins as producer. Little Women follows the life of four sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, as they navigate their lives in post-Civil War New England.

Following the Sony Hack, Amy Pascal stepped down from her post as co-chairman of the studio and is now in the process of transitioning to a producer role, including her work here for this newest adaptation. She’ll produce alongside Denise Di Novi (Focus, The Lucky One) and Robin Swicord (writer/director of The Jane Austen Book Club), with Sarah Polley (Take This Waltz, Away From Her) adapting the novel for the screen. Little Women, originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, follows the March sisters, each with a wildly different personality, as they live their lives according to the transcendentalist movement that was highly popular in America following the Civil War, and in which author Louisa May Alcott was brought up herself.

Previous adaptations of the book include a 1933 version starring Katharine Hepburn and a 1994 version that starred Winona Rider, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Bale, and Susan Sarandon. More recently, there have been other, more modern retellings, such as the YouTube series The March Family Letters.

Amy Pascal, taking the lead on this movie, is also moving into a more involved role with Sony’s Spider-Man franchise and the new Ghostbusters movies. There’s been no word yet on a start for Little Women‘s production.
