Lionsgate Successfully Picks Up ‘The Crow’ Reboot

Lionsgate Studios has just earned an eight-figure domestic distribution deal for the reboot of the 1994 cult classic The Crow. With this deal finalized on Wednesday, their reboot will be released next year.

Based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel, The Crow follows the gothic tale of a man who rose from the dead to avenge his and his fiancée’s murders. The original film starred Brandon Lee in his final film role after he was accidentally shot on set by a misfired gun.

Directed by Rupert Sanders, the reboot will star Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs, Laural Birn, and Danny Huston. Their roles haven’t been made public yet, but the producers have all expressed optimism in recapturing the graphic novel and film’s original Gothic charm. “We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans,” said EVP Acquisitions Charlotte Koh, “and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology.”

The $50 million film was shot on location in Munich and Prague, while FilmNation handled the international sales and raked in an impressive amount of deals. The film’s producers include Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida, and the late Edward R. Pressman, a producer for the original Crow.

Even though many fans will undoubtedly be skeptical of this new treatment, the producers are ”thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy” since the “original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on.”
