Nintendo confirmed in a post from Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto that they have cast the roles of Link and Zelda in their upcoming The Legend of Zelda film. English actors Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason will be playing the roles of Link and Zelda respectively.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is 16 years old and has appeared in a handful of projects. He voiced Pinocchio in Disney’s live-action remake of the same name back in 2022. Additionally, he starred in the Netflix mini-series The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020 and the Bryan Cranston-led dramady Everything’s Going to Be Great which released earlier this year.
Bo Bragason (21) appeared in the Disney+ original series Renegade Nell last year as well as the the horror comedy The Radleys. It’s clear that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are aiming for younger versions of these iconic characters, with both of them being on the younger side with less acting experience. While this is a departure from Nintendo’s star-studded cast in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, many Legend of Zelda games feature young versions of Link and Zelda. In fact, very few games feature the pair as adults, with most versions being children or teenagers.
It is unclear what the plot of the film will be and if it will be based on any one game. Popular games they may pull from are A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild, but the film could also create an original story that pulls from multiple different games. Most games feature Link setting off on adventure to save Princess Zelda and stop the evil Ganon (or Ganondorf) from spreading his malice across the kingdom of Hyrule. Wes Ball is set to direct, who directed The Maze Runner trilogy and most recently Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Writing on the film are Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu, Kong: Skull Island) and T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner, The Adam Project).
The film is currently set to release in 2027, with Nintendo and Sony Pictures co-financing the film. Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad will be producing the film.
