Lin Manuel Miranda, the mastermind behind the groundbreaking Grammy and Tony-winning Broadway show Hamilton , has confirmed that the musical will make its way on to the big screen. Additionally, in an interview with Variety, Miranda revealed that the film will feature the original Broadway cast. The film release date has not been set, although Miranda has promised “hopefully, sooner than later.” The original director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail, reportedly has taken the footage of the original cast’s run and transformed it into a cinematic feature for everyone to experience.
The original Broadway cast of Hamilton includes Miranda as the titular historical figure Alexandra Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Jonathan Groff as King George III, Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette, and Christopher Jackson as George Washington. The musical portrays the remarkable life of the American-immigrant Founding Father Alexander Hamilton with music influenced heavily by hip hop, R&B, and the histrionic traditional show tunes. The extraordinary success and popularity of the musical is due to both its thrilling soundtrack and casting of non-white actors for historical figure roles.
Hamilton is not the only project on Miranda’s current radar. He will be making his directorial debut in Netflix’s upcoming musical film tick, tick…BOOM!. In addition, he will be writing music for Disney’s upcoming live-action film Little Mermaid. The film adaptation of In The Heights, which was his first Broadway musical, will release on June 26, 2020.
