Guillermo del Toro is preparing to breathe life into his newest film, a brand new adaptation of the classic horror story Frankenstein. Although it’s slated for a limited run on the big screen, its circuit was just upgraded to premium formats.
Frankenstein is the latest in a long string of adaptations based on Mary Shelley’s iconic novel. This time around, Oscar Isaac plays Doctor Victor Frankenstein, the brilliant scientist hellbent on creating life, with Jacob Elordi playing his tortured creation. Although the film is bound for a debut on Netflix, there is a limited theatrical run slated for Frankenstein starting in October. On top of that, as Deadline notes, the film will even run in a very limited selection of IMAX theaters.
Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX confirmed the news himself during the Axios Media Live conference. Gelfond noted that a story like Frankenstein would be a perfect match for an IMAX screen, even saying that del Toro’s version “really is a theatrical movie.”
While reporting on the news, Deadline noted that the IMAX rollout will be highly limited, landing somewhere in the range of around 10 shows. That number is not set in stone, and could change before its debut.
This isn’t the first time the Pan’s Labyrinth director has worked with Netflix. In 2022, del Toro released his own stop motion animated version of the classic tale Pinocchio. The fun proved to be a hit, winning over critics and audiences alike, while going on to win Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.
