Grandma, the Paul Weitz (In Good Company) film that wowed audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, has now released its first trailer courtesy of People. The family dramedy stars Lily Tomlin (I Heart Huckabees) as Elle Reid, a self-described misanthrope who is thrust into the outside world when her 18-year-old granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner, Martha Marcy May Marlene) shows up on her doorstep needing help. The two then go on a one-day odyssey during which Elle must confront her past head-on while Sage confronts her future.
The film is sure to come with a lot of laughs as well as a few tears as Tomlin reconciles the changing world of her granddaughter’s generation with her own. On a grand scale, the differences don’t actually seem to be too wide, besides occasional missteps such as confusing The Feminine Mystique with Mystique from X-Men. Whatever the challenge, Tomlin’s natural and blatant comedy seems to show up guns blazing around every corner.
Grandma also stars Marcia Gay Harden (Into the Woods), Nat Wolff (Palo Alto), Laverne Cox (Netflix’s Orange is the New Black), Judy Greer (The Descendants), John Cho (Star Trek Into Darkness), and Sam Elliott (Tombstone). Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in theaters on August 21, 2015.
