The box office has come upon yet another Memorial Day, but this one will set itself apart. Between the live action Lilo & Stitch and the new Mission: Impossible, this Memorial Day could be the biggest in box office history.
The latest in the line of live action remakes from the House of Mouse, Lilo & Stitch follows a young Hawaiian girl, struggling to make friends, as she adopts a strange dog. Unbeknownst to her, the troublemaking dog is an alien fugitive, on the run from his creators.
While Snow White foundered earlier this year, Stitch is picking up the slack and running with it. Early predictions had the film making about $120 million across the 4-day weekend, but now it’s looking at a whopping $165 million total.
If the $165 million estimates hold, then the film could become the single highest earning title released on Memorial Day. Previously, Top Gun: Maverick boasted that title, with a $160 million opening.
Although not looking to make quite the sum that Stitch is picking up, Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning will still manage to put up a fight. Hollywood Reporter notes that the last outing for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt could become the best opening of the eight-film series, especially including the middling opening Dead Reckoning back in 2023.
