On KCRW, Lilly Wachowski discussed the next installment in the Matrix franchise. According to her, “Warner Bros.—they want to make another [movie]. They’re always going to want to make another thing. Personally, I don’t want to play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kind of done.” However, she added,”But there’s this maybe-a-thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn’t want to go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so it becomes this complicated situation—that maybe we’re going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel.”
This will not be Drew Goddard’s first science fiction project, as he recently wrote the screenplay for Project: Hail Mary and in the past has co-written The Martian. As far as feature film projects, Goddard has The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale, projects that lean more in to thriller and horror. Wachowski continued,”And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”
The last Matrix movie, Maxtrix: Resurrection, released in 2021 and saw the return of Keanu Reeves (John Wick) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Matrix). Four years later, news of the fifth installment would be spread, but it wasn’t until 2026 that an update will be officially made. During an interview with ScreenRant for Project Hail Mary, Goddard said that the next installment was, “still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”
