Attention all Toy Story fans! It’s official, Collider confirms, last night Pixar released an extended reel of footage containing both new and old clips previously released but with one new announcement – Lightyear will be coming to theaters! Due to Covid-19, Pixar ended up sending its new releases straight to streaming, unfortunately denying fans of that magical cinema experience. This highly anticipated movie is a new addition to the classic Toy Story franchise, this time telling the origin story of beloved character Buzz Lightyear, who famously first touched down on our screens in 1995 in his beloved rocket ship.
When Pixar announced that Tim Allen will not be reprising his role as classic character, but rather casting Avengers actor Chris Evans, fans were confused. Screen Rant explains Director Angus MacLane chose to cast Evans instead of Allen because he felt that the right choice was an actor who could realistically bring the Space Ranger to life in both an animated or live action setting, which Evans’ charisma convinced him of. Many have speculated if the recast was really a creative choice, or rather a consequence of Allen getting politically controversial regarding comments about incumbent President Trump. Others argue that the casting is simply because Allen is the voice of Buzz Lightyear the toy and Evans is the voice of Buzz Lightyear the person.
All the same, the upcoming Lightyear is the talk of town and if the success of Toy Story has anything to say about it, it’s sure to be a popular favorite amongst fans and family. View the official Lightyear TV spot here, and make sure to tune into theaters on June 17.
