We all know their songs. From “We Are Family” to “Lost in Music” to “Thinking of You,” the talented musical family known as Sister Sledge and their songs have brought people together for generations.
Now, according to an exclusive by Variety, the sisters, Kim, Debbie, Kathy, and the late Joni, are back in a whole new realm of entertainment. Kim Sledge, one of the four sisters, has announced that she is working toward creating a feature film following the life of the Philadelphia-natives and their rise to international fame. The film will appropriately be called Life Song after one of their biggest hits.
Based on their upcoming memoirs, the film will show all of the insane and exciting moments the sisters faced together. Along with Sister Sledge, well-loved groups and names including the Jackson 5, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown will be shown in the film as they interact with the girl group.
From their early experiences with their opera-singing grandmother, Viola Hairston Williams, to their performance at a 1974 Zaire festival opening for Muhammad Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle” fight when the power went out during their show, the film will cover every trial and tribulation the women went through in such an electric and ever-changing society.
Kim Sledge said the following about the film and what we could expect:
“Music will be a great part of it, because that’s what our lives have been about…” Of course the film will be full of their classic songs and other potential classics from the aforementioned artists, but seeing as the four women of color lived through all of the civil and political intensities of the 60’s, 70’s, and beyond, we can expect so much more than just a film about some well-known songs. “During some of the most politically transitional moments in history, we were there…”
Lou Weisbach, longtime associate and chief of the licensing business Merch Time, is set to oversee the creation of Life Song. He said the upcoming film will showcase “a great American story,” and we certainly agree with him.
