Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for the revival of The Naked Gun, this time starring Liam Neeson. The film is a continuation and reinvention of the series first started in 1988 with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! starring Leslie Nielsen. That film spawned two sequels in 1991 and 1994 respectively, both starring Nielsen. Now, Paramount seeks to revitalize the franchise, this time with a new cast led by Liam Neeson.
In the trailer, we see an immediate spoof on the revenger thriller subgenre, with Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson) narrating about the horrors of revenge all while beating a man up with his own dismembered arms. We then see Drebin cut in line to use the toilet for “police business” all while he is hailed as the “best of the best” on the Police Squad. Drebin is tasked with solving a murder, with the consequence of failure being the shutdown of the Police Squad. We even see the Police Squad HQ being turned into a Spirit Halloween store. He is also tasked to solve the case by the book, because other cops will be there to arrest him if he uses his unorthodox methods.
The Naked Gun will star Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston and more. The film aims to recapture the ridiculous and hilarious satire of the original films now with even more material to riff on. Liam Neeson fills a similar niche as Leslie Nielson did when the first film released, where he was primarily known for serious roles before developing a reputation of having a dry and deadpan sense of humor to his characters. Neeson is most known for more serious roles such as in Schindler’s List, Taken, The Phantom Menace and Batman Begins, but perfromaces in films such as Love, Actually, The Lego Movie and Ted 2 show that he can play a silly character well. The Naked Gun will hit theatres on August 1.
