A star-studded cast joins Jennifer Lawrence in a new Netflix comedy from Adam McKay, Don’t Look Up. Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry, Tomer Sisley, and Ariana Grande are set to join previously announced cast members Rob Morgan and Cate Blanchett.
McKay will direct, write, and co-produce with Kevin Messick under McKay’s Hyperobject Industries banner. McKay directed major comedies, The Big Short, Step Brothers, Anchorman, and Talladega Nights. The Netflix film Don’t Look Up follows two low-level astronomers who embark on a media tour to warn humanity of an imminent asteroid that will destroy the earth.
The film is scheduled to start filming before the end of the year. Lawrence and DiCaprio are rumored to play the two astronomers, but Netflix wouldn’t confirm that.
DiCaprio had been weighing the decision to join the film because he had already signed on to Martin Scorsese’s next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, and had to work his schedule to allow time for both films. DiCaprio is one of few that hasn’t starred in a project produced by a streaming site. Given how many famous movie stars joining the comedy Don’t Look Up, a theatrical release date seems highly likely, and by then, maybe the pandemic will be a distant memory.
