After his first big budget studio production in The Invisible Man, it seemed all set for director Leigh Whannell to helm the next installment in the Universal’s Monsters reboot series with his adaptation of The Wolfman. However, it seems that things have fallen through with the film, with Leigh Whannell walking away from the film and director Derek Cianfrance. But, things are still looking up for the director who is now in talks with Universal to direct an remake of the classic franchise The Green Hornet.
The Green Hornet is one of the oldest entertainment franchises in American history. It initially started out as an early radio serial, then in the 1940’s as a series of cliffhanger serials then as an 1966 TV series which brought famed martial arts icon Bruce Lee to the states as side-man Kato. The series follows Britt Reid, news magnate, who turns into the nighttime vigilante The Green Hornet who is aided by his trusty assistant Kato. Wanted by police and feared by the criminal underworld, his personal arsenal which includes one of the best cars in film and TV history The Black Beauty.
This is not the first time an spin on the classic franchise is being made however, Sony tried their hand at it with an comical take on the series with Seth Rogen starring as the title role in 2011’s The Green Hornet. Universal has snapped up the rights to the franchise, and started accepting pitches for the film in 2020. After finding a good enough script in David Koepp’s take on the subject, the studio has meet several directors and have reportedly chosen Whannell.
