Directors Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish will each direct a film for an upcoming trilogy connected by the storyline of Lego’s interlocking block toys.
Specific titles and storylines for the three films have not been announced, but each will share a live-action format and a common theme.
The Lego franchise has previously found success with animated movies, including The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, but a live-action adaptation would be a fresh approach for the brand.
Kasdan, currently working on Jumanji 3, is set to direct the first film in the trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter notes that “his feature has a script from Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (The D Train) after Matt Rider and Kevin Burrows (The Package) wrote a previous version.”
Both the Lego Group and Universal Studios will be involved in the production of each film. Universal’s vision will be supported by Matt Riley and Jacqueline Garell, while Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians from the Lego Group will contribute their expertise.
