In an interview with Collider, Legendary Pictures founder and CEO Thomas Tull discussed Godzilla, working with director Gareth Edwards, and possibility of Pacific Rim 2. Tull has overseen the production of The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Hangover Trilogy, Inception, and many others. Legendary’s take on the king of monsters will open on May 16.
Tull describes himself as a lifelong Godzilla fan and he looks forward to seeing how the new movies is received by audiences. He points to Legendary’s success with revitalizing the Batman franchise as well as Edwards’ work on his debut film Monsters as reasons for fans to get excited. Tull recalls that he “was astounded by the way (Edwards)- you can tell by the camera placement and everything, and holding tension, before somebody explained to me who did it and how much they spent and everything I just thought this is remarkable I want to meet this guy.” While Tull acknowledged that Edwards has a ways to go before he joins the likes of Christopher Nolan or Guillermo Del Toro, he sees that same drive in Edwards and believes he has a lot of potential.
Speaking of Del Toro, when asked about the possibility of a sequel to Pacific Rim, Tull said that he has loved working with Guillermo and they were both very excited about the film’s success overseas and on home video. He stated that he would be open to the idea of a sequel if Del Toro was also interested. Del Toro meanwhile, previously claimed to have a script already in the works for a possible sequel. Del Toro is currently working on Crimson Peak so any official announcement is unlikely at this time. Still, giant robot fans should be excited to hear that both Tull and Del Toro are on board.
