Director Lee Cronin has unveiled his brand new project. He will be writing and directing a new take on the classic monster icon, The Mummy. Since it first debuted in 1932, The Mummy has remained a staple of film and of the horror genre. Originally portrayed by Boris Karloff, the film has been reimagined several times, and in several different ways. Christopher Lee played a new take on the character in 1959, and a version of the story was made in 2017, which was meant to be the starting point of a new cinematic universe of classic monster icons.
This year saw the 25th anniversary of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy, where he reimagined the tale as an action flick, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz headlining. That film would spawn two sequels with 2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor.
Cronin’s most recent success was found in the form of Evil Dead Rise, a new installment in Sam Raimi’s iconic horror series. Akin to The Mummy, Cronin served as both director and writer on Evil Dead Rise, which opened to $24 million at the domestic box office.
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are joining once again to put out the new film. Similarly, Blumhouse has another movie slated to release next month, Wolf Man, which, like The Mummy, is a reimagining of another one of Universal’s iconic monsters, the Wolf Man. Director Leigh Whannell also helmed 2020’s Invisible Man.
Hollywood Reporter noted that Cronin’s Mummy currently being kept mummified itself, with very little details given as to the nature of the flick. Although, Cronin did tell Hollywood Reporter directly that he’s aiming for “something very ancient and very frightening.”
The Mummy will be released on April 17th, 2026.
